Ronald P. Grelsamer, M.D., is the chief of hip and knee reconstruction at Maimonides Medical Center, and a staff orthopaedic surgeon at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases/Orthopaedic Institute.

Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987, Dr. Grelsamer has been continuously recognized in New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors of New York,” and in Castle Connolly’s directory of “American Top Doctors.” He has also shared his expertise with the public on NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Eyewitness News, FOX TV, and in USA Today.

Dr. Grelsamer is a former clinical director of knee research at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, and a former faculty member of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at Columbia University. Dr. Grelsamer received his degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1979, and completed his Fellowship in Hip and Knee Implant Surgery at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1985.

Known as “Dr. Patella” to many of his colleagues, Dr. Grelsamer is at the forefront of orthopaedic research and technology, integrating the latest treatment and surgery options into his practice. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Société Française de Chirurgie Orthopédique et Traumatologique, and the International Patellofemoral Study Group. In February, 1993, he was honored with a grant from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Award, and, in 1995, with the Research Award from the American College of Sports Medicine – Greater New York Chapter.

Dr. Grelsamer, whose specialties include patella pain, hip and knee arthritis surgery, arthroscopic surgery, knee ligament reconstruction, and the diagnosis of mysterious knee pain, has been treating people of all ages for twenty years at his two offices in New York City and Brooklyn, New York. Traditionally trained and educated, Grelsamer is an avid patient advocate who is dedicated to diagnosing and treating even the most complicated orthopaedic cases.

“Whether one has a history of arthritis, a sports- or work-related injury, or suffers with chronic, unsolvable knee or hip pain, it is important to feel confident about a diagnosis and plan of action,” says Grelsamer. “We live at a time when fitness and exercise are synonymous with optimum health. Concurrently, the numbers of bone and joint disorders are rising, and according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, over 600,000 people undergo hip and knee replacements each year. It is more important than ever that patients have the tools and knowledge to be informed consumers.

“If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem,” adds Grelsamer. “I derive great professional satisfaction from passing along the knowledge and practical experience I have acquired and discovered over the years. I’d like to think that my contributions are making a significant difference in the health of my patients and readers.”

Ronald Grelsamer resides in New York City with his wife, two children, two dogs, and a cat named Virgil. When he isn’t practicing medicine, Dr. Grelsamer enjoys writing, hiking, skiing, and music.
